Name:
Kayla Quarles
Degree(s) earned from Eastern and from other schools:
- 2013 – Associate in Arts
Are you still taking classes? If so, where and what degree are you working toward?
Yes, I am currently taking classes at Eastern. I’m in the Hospitality and Tourism Management program, and plan to graduate in May.
Current Employer/Job (if applicable):
I work at Capon Springs and Farms. I’ve been there for 18 years and currently serve as the Dining Room Manager.
What is something you learned (knowledge, training, skills) during your academic program that you utilize in your workplace and/or current studies?
The Hospitality and Tourism Management classes have been a great way to reinforce what I’ve learned on the job, while also filling in gaps from experiences I may have missed without formal training. Its helped me grow both professionally and personally.
Please share if courses, faculty, and/or staff at Eastern contributed to your career/educational success and how they helped:
I met Morgan Armentrout at Capon, and we instantly clicked. When I heard about the program she would be instructing, I knew it would be beneficial for my career. Morgan has always been available to answer questions and is willing to help in any way she can. Thank you, Morgan!
What advice would you give to current Eastern students who are looking to follow a similar path to a job or continued studies?
The hospitality industry isn’t for everyone, but it’s where I’ve been able to grow and continue growing. I was very shy when I started, and while I’m still a little shy, I’ve learned how to communicate effectively with almost anyone. Like any career, you’ll have good days and bad days—but it can be incredibly rewarding.
