Moorefield, W.Va. – Senator Shelley Moore Capito’s Office has disclosed that Eastern West Virginia Community & Technical College has been granted $1.4 million through congressionally directed spending to support the establishment of a new heavy equipment operators’ program. The funding will be utilized to acquire additional land for hosting the heavy equipment and training program, as well as to procure various types of heavy equipment such as simulators, a mini excavator, dozer, dump truck, backhoe, forklift, and other equipment.
Dr. Tom Striplin, President of Eastern, expressed, “We are incredibly enthusiastic and grateful for the support from Senator Capito, acknowledging the importance of training individuals in heavy equipment operation. Workforce training and development are fundamental to the mission of many community colleges, addressing the rising demand caused by industry shortages. We understand that some students are inclined towards trades rather than pursuing a college degree, and we are committed to offering academic and workforce training opportunities within the Potomac Highlands Region.”
Eastern intends to seek further congressional funding in FY2025 to erect a building and training center equipped with classrooms and ample space to facilitate the program. Lauren Arbaugh, Workforce and Continuing Education Program Coordinator stated, “This presents an incredible opportunity for individuals to acquire valuable skills.
