Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College President to Speak at South by Southwest

Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College President Dr. Charles Terrell will speak at this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) conference on Friday, March 8.

Terrell, who will be joined by Robert C. Byrd Institute’s Bill Woodrum, will participate in SXSW’s Rural Meet Up. The session will bring together those who want to discuss ways to improve opportunities for rural communities.

“Having the opportunity to speak at SXSW about how we’ve met student and state demands at Eastern, is not only a great thing for us, but may aid other institutions in developing solutions to the plights facing rural students,” said Terrell. “Rural students often have fewer educational opportunities and needs that differ from students in larger cities. In working with local organizations and monitoring the greatest workforce needs in our community, we can all work together to continue offering competitive degree and training options to students in rural areas of the country.”

Located more than two hours from any major city, Eastern has found success meeting the needs of rural students. Because rural communities offer varying opportunities and meet different challenges than urban and suburban areas, innovative ideas must be employed to allow students in these areas to receive education in some of the most in-demand fields. The recent RuralRISE Summit 2018 helped in the development and creation of a community of rural entrepreneurs, rural ecosystem builders and organizations interested in recognizing and funding opportunities.

The Rural Meet Up is scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Fairmont Austin Hotel Sunflower Room, fourth floor, 101 Red River in Austin, TX.
