Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College will present Ruby Payne, Ph.D.’s workshop, A Framework for Understanding Poverty, on Tuesday, April 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Throughout the workshop, certified trainer Peggy C. Hawse, RESA VIII will share how resources, language and family structure can affect students and facilitate ways in which barriers can be analyzed and removed. The workshop will promote 10 actions that can be implemented in the classroom to improve the success of socially and economically disadvantaged (low-SES) students and is based on Payne’s book of the same name.
“We are pleased to offer this workshop to our faculty and the community,” said Eastern President Dr. Chuck Terrell. “We hope to utilize these strategies to better instruct and serve poverty-stricken students in our area. Peggy was instrumental in the development of Eastern as an institution and served as our first administrative dean. She understands the area, the populations we serve and will be an excellent facilitator for Ruby’s work.”
Hawes spent 30 years as an education administrator and a total of 34 years in education. In addition to serving as the principal of Moorefield Elementary, she completed a study identifying the need for a community college in the Potomac Highlands region. When Eastern opened, she was hired as its first employee, serving as the executive dean for administrative services and left to develop a program for mentoring new teachers for RESA VIII. Most recently, Hawse was the regional coordinator for U.S. Senator Joe Manchin.
After more than 30 years of working in public schools, Payne took her experience and established aha! Process, which offers a range of solutions focusing on creating sustainable success for all students, including workshops, consulting, books and trainings for K-12, higher education and communities. She is the author of numerous books, most of which stem off or build upon her bestselling A Framework for Understanding Poverty.
Eastern’s A Framework for Understanding Poverty workshop will take place at the main campus, Room 104B, 316 Eastern Drive in Moorefield. Snacks will also be provided.
