Eastern West Virginia Community & Technical College Announces New Biological and Environmental Technician Associate Degree and Certificate Programs starting in August.
With input from regional employers, the program was developed for high school students with interest in the energy/natural resource industry and existing local technicians who require additional training
(Moorefield, WV) – Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College (EWVCTC) today announced the addition a Biological and Environmental Technician Program. The program will be offered to eligible students starting in the Fall 2017 semester.
The Associate of Science degree program will train technicians for such environmental technology-related jobs as biological technicians, environmental technicians, and GIS technicians. A certificate program in Biological and Environmental Technology will also be offered.
“As a community and technical college, we need to be responsive to the needs of our local employers,” said Dr. Chuck Terrell, EWVCTC President. “This program is a true partnership with business and industry. The jobs are there and employers are excited to have highly trained technicians to advance their work in environmental technology.”
Developed with input from local employers, the Biological and Environmental Technology program was designed for high school graduates with an interest in the energy and natural resource industry; existing technicians who need customized training; technicians looking for work based credits toward earning a degree; and existing workers who want to upgrade their skills to take advantage of career advancement opportunities. The program includes both extensive classroom instruction and field training.
“With the Potomac Highlands’ rich natural resources and economic development, trained biological and environmental technicians are in demand both here and across the country,” said Anthony Oliverio, program faculty. “The Biological and Environmental Technology program will create trained and knowledgeable people who will ensure responsible economic development, while protecting our water, air, and biological systems for our generation and future generations.”
Upon program completion, trained biological and environmental technicians will have the ability to:
- Conduct biological and environmental sampling projects
- Analyze water, soil and air samples
- Help prevent, control, and eliminate environmental hazards
- Promote sustainable practices
- Utilize G.P.S. to collect, map, and analyze biological and environmental data
