Reflections Writing Competition: ‘First’

What does ‘First’ mean to you? Share your ideas in less than 2000 well-chosen words and a $50 Amazon gift card could be yours!

The ‘First’ writing competition invites you to interpret this word in any way you wish: it could be the driving point of a story, real or imagined; it could be the focus of a reflection on the meaning and importance, or otherwise, of being ‘first’ – whatever springs to mind when you consider this word is acceptable if it directs your writing.

The Rules

1. Entries should be Word documents or PDFs (no particular formatting is required) and submitted as email attachments to dominic.phillips@easternwv.edu by the end of Friday, April 4th.

2. Entries should be between 1000 and 2000 words in length.

3. Entries should be focused around the idea of ‘First’. They can take any form or writing – short stories and narratives, monologues, accounts, autobiographical or fiction: any and all entries will be judged by a panel on their merits in
1) Using language powerfully in engaging their reader and;
2) Conveying the idea of being ‘first’, however that is interpreted by the writer.
