Michael Moore Scholarship Available to Early Entrance Students

Michael Moore was a college roommate and best friend of Curtis Hakala, Dean of Teaching and Learning at Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College, who unexpectedly passed away over ten years ago from an undiagnosed heart abnormality. He inspired Curtis to continue working hard towards his educational goals. This scholarship was created in Michael’s honor to allow high school students in Hardy County to receive free college credit and get a head start on their own educational dreams.

The Michael Moore Scholarship will be awarded to two students qualified to enroll in Early Entrance classes while attending high school in Hardy County during the 2020-2021 Academic Year. The scholarship will be a one-time award per student of up to $1,500, ($750 per term) payable to Eastern West Virginia Community & Technical College (Eastern) towards the recipient’s tuition, books, and fees for one academic year.

The recipient of the scholarship must meet the following requirements:

  • A resident of Hardy County
  • A person who is active in his/her local community, giving back to and/or helping make their community a better place
  • High school cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  • A junior or senior at Moorefield High School or East Hardy High School
  • Enrolled for a minimum of two Early Entrance classes per semester at Eastern
  • Fulfill two recruitment events for the college

Preference given to first-generation students planning on attending a higher education institution (e.g. parents have no more than high school degree).

There are no restrictions on field of study (e.g., technology, computer science, business, science, math, etc.).

Applications may be submitted by mailing the completed application form to Eastern, ATTN: Michael Moore Scholarship Application, Learner Support Services, 316 Eastern Drive, Moorefield, WV 26836. All applications must be postmarked by July 24, 2020.  Final selection and award determination will be made by a scholarship review committee.
