MOOREFIELD, W.Va.—Join livestock handlers and producers for the upcoming Stockmanship & Stewardship and Beef Quality Assurance (BQA)-Transportation training program hosted by Eastern Agriculture Innovation on Friday, June 16 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Tri-County Fairgrounds in Petersburg.
The presentations and hands-on demonstrations will be led by industry experts and representatives from Texas A&M Agrilife Extension, West Virginia University Extension Service and the West Virginia Department of Agriculture. More than a dozen vendors will be in attendance and participants will be entered into a raffle.
The all-day Stockmanship & Stewardship BQA-Transportation certification will provide participants knowledge on how to properly handle and haul cattle using a gooseneck trailer and will also support professional drivers to have safer cattle handling experiences when using a semi-trailer.
Beef producers will spend the early morning learning science-based production practices that assure cattle well-being, beef quality, and safety from WVU Extension Livestock Specialist Kevin Shaffer. The program will include best practices around cattle handling, facility management and protecting herd health.
The mid-morning and afternoon session will feature Dr. Ron Gill from Texas A&M Extension. Dr. Gill will conduct a hands-on workshop to demonstrate proper methods for hauling and handling cattle, including reviewing fitness for transport, trip planning and loading, biosecurity, and emergency management.
Attendees will receive complimentary water, sodas, and refreshments throughout the day, as well as a corn beef hash breakfast and a steak and cheese hoagie for lunch from Flying W Farms. The meals are sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture.
The all-day program will also permit West Virginia veterinarians seeking non-medical continuing education credits five hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval. Veterinarians should bring their license number to submit at registration.
Vendors set to be in attendance are: West Virginia Department of Agriculture, WVU Extension, Cattlemen’s & Beef Council, Appalachian Abattoir/Mountain State Ground Beef Program, Farm Credit of the Virginias, Mountainview Veterinary Services, Potomac State College, BFS Bruceton Ag Service/Southern States, Kent Feeds, Rockingham Co-op, Pearson Equipment, Welton Trucking, and Freedom Ag & Energy.
